Do not take the phone away. Not yet, anyway. After years of teaching secondary math and a lot of parent conferences that started exactly where you are now, I can tell you the app on your kid's phone is not what decides whether they learn math this year. What they do in the thirty seconds after the app shows an answer is.
So before any rules get made, you need to know which of three situations you are actually looking at. Only one of them is an emergency.
First, figure out which kid you have
Solver apps like Photomath get used in three distinct ways, and from across the kitchen they all look identical: phone propped against the textbook, camera pointed at a problem.
- Checking after solving. The worksheet already has work on it. The app comes out at the end, answers get compared, and a wrong one sends your kid back into their own steps. This is not a problem. This is what good students do, and math teachers spend years begging students to check their work at all.
- Getting unstuck. The work stops at step three, the app comes out, your kid reads the next step, puts the phone down, and keeps going. Also fine, mostly. A worked step at the moment of being stuck is roughly what a tutor would provide, minus the tutor asking "so why did that work?" That question becomes your job, and I will show you a version of it that requires no math on your part.
- Copying before trying. The page is blank, the app comes out first, and answers move from screen to paper assembly-line style. This is the one to act on. Not because your child is a cheater, but because a semester of this produces a very specific outcome: finished homework, failed tests, and a teacher who saw it coming in October.
That third pattern is also the one teachers detect, and they do not detect it from the app. They detect it from the paper: methods nobody taught, perfect homework next to blank quizzes. The homework-test gap is your early warning signal, and it is a better one than anything you will catch by hovering.
The uncomfortable research finding about helping yourself
Here is the part of this conversation nobody expects. If math makes you anxious, the riskiest homework intervention in your house might not be the app. It might be you.
A team of University of Chicago researchers followed 438 first- and second-graders across a school year and measured their parents' math anxiety at the start. Children of math-anxious parents learned significantly less math over the year and ended it more math-anxious themselves, but only when those parents helped with math homework frequently. When math-anxious parents helped less often, the effect disappeared. The anxiety itself was not contagious through the air; it traveled through the helping.
Two honest caveats before you use this finding to resign from homework duty. The study is correlational, not an experiment, and it followed six- to eight-year-olds, not teenagers. But its practical suggestion is hard to ignore, and the researchers said it themselves in the university's own writeup: parents who dread math should look for ways to interact with their kids around math positively, through books, games, and apps, rather than through tense line-by-line homework supervision.
Read that carefully. The researchers who documented parents making math homework worse pointed at apps as one of the alternatives. The tool you are worried about may be doing a job you do not want, delivered more calmly than you would deliver it at 9 pm on a Tuesday.
What the reviewers worry about, and what they don't
Common Sense Media, which reviews apps for families, rates Photomath as appropriate for ages 11 and up, and their whole verdict fits in a sentence: it is a solid support tool, "watch for cheating". Their reviewers land where most teachers I know land. Kids genuinely can learn from seeing a multistep solution broken into steps. Some kids will use it as an answer vending machine instead. The app does not choose which; the habits around it do.
Notice what is missing from the worry list: nobody serious argues the app gives wrong answers often enough to matter for school homework, and nobody serious argues seeing worked steps hurts learning. The entire question is whether your child does the attempt before or after the phone comes out. That order is the whole game, and it is also the thing a house rule can actually control.
House rules that survive contact with a real teenager
Rules that work share one property: they are checkable without you doing any math. These are the ones I give parents at conferences.
- Attempt first, app second. The app is a checker and an unsticker, never an opener. A blank page means the phone stays in the other room. This single rule converts the dangerous usage pattern into the healthy one, and it is the same advice Common Sense Media gives.
- Steps over answers. When the app catches a wrong answer, the assignment is not "write the right one down", it is "find the line where your work went a different way than the app's". Diagnosing your own wrong turn is the single highest-value thing a student can do with a worked solution, and it is precisely the part that copying skips.
- The explain-one-step rule. Once or twice a session, point at a step on the screen and ask "why is that allowed?" You do not need to know the answer. You need to watch whether an explanation comes out. A kid who can say "they divided both sides by 3 to get x alone" is learning, whatever the phone is doing. A kid who shrugs is copying. This is the teacher move, it takes ten seconds, and it completely sidesteps the anxious-helper trap from the Chicago study, because you are auditing explanation, not teaching content.
- Homework happens in a shared room. Not as surveillance, but because the copy-first pattern needs privacy and speed, and a kitchen table quietly removes both.
- Watch the gap, not the phone. Quiz and test grades are the ground truth. Homework grades measure compliance; test grades measure learning. If homework says 95 and tests say 60, you have your answer about how the app is being used, whatever your child reports.
If your kid pushes back with "so I'm just not allowed to use it?", the honest response is that there is a version of solver use that produces students who do better on tests, and it looks like rule 1 plus rule 2. Have them read it instead of you paraphrasing it; it lands differently from someone who is not their parent.
Should you pay for the premium tier?
Probably not, or at least not yet. As of August 2026, Photomath's free tier already includes the step-by-step solutions, which is the part that matters for everything above; the paid tier adds animated tutorials and textbook-specific solutions. Step in when two things line up: you have seen the copy-first pattern more than once, and the test grades are sliding. At that point, skip the phone confiscation and email the teacher instead. Say what you have seen, plainly. Teachers deal with solver apps every week, most of us are far less punitive about it than parents expect, and a teacher who knows what is happening at home can put the right kind of pressure on at school, where the phone is not an option anyway.
And if the pattern you found was the first one, the kid with worked pages who checks answers before turning them in? Say nothing. Maybe buy them an ice cream. From the front of a classroom, that habit is rarer than you would hope, and it is worth protecting.
