AP Calc BC vs AB: What Is Actually Extra

The difference is two units and six topics, roughly a third of the BC exam. Here is the full delta from the official course descriptions, what stays identical, and the AB subscore fact most students choosing between them have never heard of.

The difference between AP Calculus AB and BC is two whole units and six specific topics. That is the entire list. Everything else, limits through basic differential equations, appears in both courses, and College Board tests the shared material at the same conceptual level in each. On the BC exam, the extra material adds up to roughly a third of your score.

Deciding between the two is easier when you can see exactly what that third contains, so here is the delta, topic by topic, from the official course descriptions, plus the one scoring fact about BC that most students choosing between them have never heard of.

The two units that exist only in BC

AB runs through eight units. BC runs through the same eight and then keeps going.

Unit 9: Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions. Weighted at 10 to 15 percent of the BC exam per College Board's course page. Conceptually this unit is mostly your existing derivative and integral machinery pointed at curves that are no longer plain functions of xx: motion along a path, slopes of polar curves, area swept by a polar graph, and speed as

Unit 10: Infinite Sequences and Series. Weighted at 15 to 20 percent, tied with integration for the heaviest unit on the BC exam, and it is the one with no AB analogue at all. Convergence tests, error bounds, power series, and Taylor and Maclaurin series like

In my coaching, series is where BC review time goes, partly because the unit lands last in the year when everything is rushed, and partly because it feels like a different subject: less computing, more arguing about whether a sum settles down. Add the ranges up and units 9 and 10 alone are 25 to 35 percent of the BC exam. That, more than any difficulty difference, is what "BC covers more" actually means.

The six topics hiding inside shared units

The subtler part of the delta is that three of the shared units contain topics the course description marks BC only. There are six of them:

  • Integration by parts (unit 6). AB students get u-substitution only; BC students get the product-rule-in-reverse technique and the judgment calls that come with it.   • Integration using linear partial fractions (unit 6). Splitting a rational integrand into simpler pieces before integrating.
  • Improper integrals (unit 6). Integrals with an infinite limit or an unbounded integrand, evaluated as limits, like 11x2dx=1\int_1^{\infty} \frac{1}{x^2}\,dx = 1.
  • Euler's method (unit 7). Numerically stepping along a solution to a differential equation you cannot solve exactly.
  • Logistic models (unit 7). The growth-with-a-ceiling equation dPdt=kP(1PL)\frac{dP}{dt} = kP\left(1 - \frac{P}{L}\right) and what its solutions do.
  • Arc length (unit 8). The length of a curve, which then reappears in unit 9 for parametric paths.

Notice the pattern: four of the six are integration techniques or integration applications. If AB's integration unit felt thin to you, that is because the interesting toolkit is largely fenced off in BC.

What is not different

Three things stay identical, and each one matters for the decision.

The exam shape. Both exams run 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes and 6 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, each section worth half the score, with the same calculator and no-calculator splits. BC is not a longer test. It is the same container with more topics competing for the same 48 questions.

The level on shared topics. College Board states that common topics are tested at the same conceptual level in both courses. A chain rule question on the BC exam is not a harder chain rule question. BC's difficulty comes from breadth and pace, not from deeper versions of AB material.

The AB material itself. Which leads to the fact worth knowing: the BC exam reports a separate Calculus AB subscore on the usual 1 to 5 scale, based on the roughly 60 percent of the BC exam devoted to AB topics, and College Board recommends colleges treat it like an AB exam score. In plain terms: taking BC does not mean gambling away your AB result. A student who struggles with series but is solid on the core can still walk out with an AB-equivalent credential inside their BC score report.

What each one is worth in college credit

The practical stakes: at most colleges that award AP calculus credit, a qualifying AB score places you out of one semester of calculus, and a qualifying BC score places you out of two. The extra third of the BC exam is what buys the second semester. Policies genuinely vary, though. Required scores range from 3 to 5, some engineering programs award credit hours but still make you take their own calculus sequence, and a few competitive schools award nothing at all. Before you let credit drive the AB-or-BC decision, look up the AP credit chart for two or three colleges you actually care about, because the answer there beats any general rule.

There is also a scheduling path some high schools offer that changes the calculus: AB one year, BC the next. If that option exists for you, the BC year is mostly the delta this article just listed, units 9 and 10 plus the six fenced-off topics, layered on top of a full year of AB-strength fundamentals. Students on that track tend to find BC's pace comfortable, since the compression that makes one-year BC intense is exactly what the two-year path removes. The trade is a year of schedule space, which not everyone has.

So which one should you take?

The honest deciding factor is pace, not ability. Both courses spend most of their time on the same eight units; BC compresses them to make room for units 9 and 10 and the six extra topics. That compression is the experience of BC: fewer days per idea, less time to be confused before the class moves.

Take BC if you were comfortable in precalculus, want the second semester of college credit, or plan on engineering, physics, or math, where Calculus II is required anyway and taking it at your own school with a teacher you know beats taking it in a 300-seat lecture hall. Take AB if precalculus took real effort, because a solid 5 on AB serves you better than a shaky 3 on BC, and the AB subscore safety net helps only if the core stays strong while you struggle with the extras, not if the pace sinks everything at once.

Whichever you pick, the free-response section is more predictable than students expect. We sorted three years of released AB questions into the six free-response types that repeat every year, and since the courses share their core, most of those types show up on BC free-response too, just with parametric or series variants layered on.

One housekeeping note if you are reading this for a 2027 exam: College Board has announced multiple-choice count and timing changes effective May 2027, so re-check the current figures on their site before you build a pacing plan around the numbers above, which are accurate as of August 2026.
